Major U.S. stock indexes closed higher on Thursday, with the S&P 500 achieving a new record high, signaling robust investor confidence. The Nasdaq Composite also posted significant gains, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished the trading day in positive territory.
The market’s upward momentum was largely attributed to newly released inflation data indicating an easing of price pressures. The U.S. Labor Department reported that the Producer Price Index (PPI) for July was flat month-over-month, falling short of economists’ expectations for a 0.2% increase. Annually, the PPI rose 4.7%, moderating from the previous month, suggesting that wholesale inflation is easing.
Adding to the positive sentiment were strong corporate earnings reports for the second quarter. Most S&P 500 companies surpassed Wall Street’s earnings per share estimates, making it one of the most successful reporting seasons in recent memory. Technology firms, including memory chip maker SanDisk (SNDK), saw their shares climb following positive financial outlooks and strong performance.
Despite the broad market rally, some analysts maintain a cautious outlook. A portion of the S&P 500’s overall earnings growth was influenced by some large companies, such as Alphabet and Amazon, significantly exceeding expectations. Concerns also persist regarding a potential slowdown in earnings growth in future quarters and the enduring complexities within the broader macroeconomic landscape.
The softer inflation figures reinforced expectations that the U.S. Federal Reserve will likely keep interest rates unchanged at its upcoming September policy meeting. This outlook, combined with a decrease in Treasury yields and a drop in crude oil prices, contributed to improved market sentiment and provided additional impetus for the day’s stock gains.
