Hanwha Group is set to invest up to $299 million (approximately 415 billion Korean won) into its U.S. defense subsidiaries. This capital injection will be realized through participation in rights offerings by Hanwha Defense USA (한화디펜스USA) and the strategic asset investment vehicle Hanwha FutureProof (한화퓨처프루프). Hanwha Aerospace will contribute $149 million to Hanwha Defense USA, while Hanwha Aerospace, Hanwha Ocean, Hanwha Systems, and Hanwha Solutions will collectively invest $150 million into Hanwha FutureProof. This substantial investment underscores Hanwha’s strategic push to expand its operational base in the U.S. market, driven by recent successes in U.S. Army artillery programs and a focus on Navy shipbuilding.

Hanwha Defense USA recently secured a prototype development contract for the U.S. Army’s Mobile Tactical Cannon (MTC) program, committing to supply six K9 Mobile Howitzer (K9MH) wheeled self-propelled artillery systems. This initial contract is valued at approximately $100.3 million, with the potential for the full-scale production program to exceed $7 billion. To support this, Hanwha is establishing an integration and testing facility for the K9MH in Opelika, Alabama, and is considering building a plant in Arkansas to produce ammunition and propellants for the U.S. military.

Beyond land defense, Hanwha is actively pursuing opportunities in the naval sector. Leveraging Philly Shipyard, which it acquired in 2024, Hanwha aims to expand its U.S. shipbuilding business. The group is also in the process of acquiring Austal USA (오스탈USA), a prominent U.S. shipbuilder that contributes to U.S. Navy vessels and nuclear submarine modules. These moves signal Hanwha’s ambition to establish a strong presence in both land and naval defense segments within the American market.

This significant investment is expected to bolster Hanwha Group’s defense capabilities and secure a long-term growth foundation in the competitive U.S. defense market. While the broader domestic defense industry has seen a slower pace in finalizing export contracts, Hanwha Aerospace has consistently demonstrated its ability to secure multiple deals, setting it apart from its peers. This strategic financial commitment is therefore anticipated to have a positive impact on Hanwha’s defense-related business performance and potentially its stock valuation, as it strengthens the company’s position as a global defense contractor.
